All Poly Flex flexible couplings are designed, manufactured, and tested in-house. Established in 1981, Poly Flex has many years of experience and hands-on control at all stages. Poly Flex is proud of all its achievements and has successfully distributed products worldwide including to the USA. Using only the highest quality engineering heat-cured polymer alloys, Poly Flex’s range of flexible couplings for the USA market are long-lasting and resistant to oil, fuel, and most other chemicals. The extensive range of flexible couplings have a plethora of benefits, including but not limited to:

Providing a damper between the gearbox and propeller shaft to isolate vibration from the engine and gearbox.

Dampens the noise and vibration from the propeller shaft.

Reduces the shock of forward and reverse gear changes.

Works in conjunction with the engine mounts by providing the softest element in the shaft assembly to improve performance.

Acts when overloaded (by running aground or knotting a rope around the shaft) by shearing at a designed point to protect the engine, gearbox, and vessel.

The Poly Flex flexible coupling range is moulded from engineering heat-cured polymer alloys of the highest standards, and all metal components are plated in SA5 cobalt zinc, increasing the metal life that normal zinc plating would give by 600%. All flexible couplings are machined on purpose-built flange jigs and have a maximum runout of 0.002” or 0.05mm. Spigots are machined to a tolerance within +/- 0.002” or +/- 0.05mm. To ensure maximum strength, durability, and performance of a Poly Flex flexible coupling, an installation guideline is included when sold. All these quality-controlled measures make Poly Flex flexible couplings ideal for any market, including USA manufacturing.

Purchasing one of Poly Flex’s flexible couplings within Australia or overseas, like USA, is easy with a few measurements. You will need to know the measurements of your current gearbox and propeller shaft flanges. A vernier calliper is the best tool to use to measure the following:

PCD (F) Known As Pitch Circle Diameter:

When looking at the gearbox flange, you will find a hole pattern where one hole is aligned with another hole directly opposite it. To find the PCD measure the outside edge of the hole to the inside edge of the hole directly opposite, as shown in figure a. It is good practice to measure more than one hole and take the average.

Number And Size Of Bolts (B):

The number of bolts is determined by the number of holes in the gearbox flange. Our flexible couplings range from a 3-bolt pattern up to a 12-bolt pattern. To determine the size of the bolts, simply measure the inside diameter of the holes in the gearbox flange.

Spigot (E) Male Or Female:

To determine whether the spigot is male or female, check which way it is facing on the gearbox flange. If it is protruding, it is male, and if it is recessed, it is female. If male, measure the outside diameter of the spigot on the gearbox flange using a vernier calliper (figure b). If female, measure the inside diameter of the spigot on the gearbox flange using a vernier calliper (figure c).

For our flexible couplings to work correctly, they must be strong enough to handle and control the torque rating specified for the installation within US manufacturing. In other words, it must be able to carry the torque rating loads output by the engine/gearbox during normal operation but at the same time be able to shear at a designed point to protect both the engine and gearbox. Poly Flex recommends that you use these formulas to calculate the rating of the installation.

The demand for half couplings in the USA has grown over recent years, with wait times for products becoming greater. Poly Flex half couplings are all CNC machined and designed in our facility. Poly Flex constantly carries stock, which means orders can be expedited and dispatched quickly. The ability to shaft machine, keyway cut, grub screw, and modify our standard range of half couplings allows Poly Flex to quickly send customers in the USA a finished product ready for installation, removing the need for a customer to remove their shaft.

Poly Flex has worked closely with The Prop Shop in Washington, USA to stock a range of off-the-shelf half couplings ready for dispatch and installation in response to the growing demand for half couplings in the USA. All Poly Flex half couplings are shaft machined with a H7 morse taper shank reamer assuring the bore is done accurately. All metal components are plated with SA5 cobalt zinc for maximum corrosion resistance and durability.

Quality control plays a pivotal role in daily operations at Poly Flex. We take great pride in our ability to design and produce a wide spectrum of products, incorporating our CNC machining for all our internally designed and manufactured products, including our extensive range of half couplings. This allows Poly Flex to offer a wide range of half couplings to the US market, depending on the customer’s application.

Poly Flex half couplings are a steel mating component used between the gearbox and output shaft designed to transmit power from the drive train to a driven shaft. Poly Flex manufactures a wide variety of half couplings for the USA market designed to suit multiple applications depending on the shaft setup, including a parallel clamp steel coupling, a pilot steel coupling, and a taper lock steel coupling.

Parallel Clamp Coupling

Firstly, a parallel clamp coupling is our most popular and commonly used half coupling. A parallel clamp half coupling is used in straight shaft applications. It allows the customer to tighten the coupling onto the shaft using socket head cap screws going through the body of it. In smaller horsepower applications, a keyway or grub screw may not be necessary. Poly Flex constantly carry stock of four-inch to six-inch parallel clamp couplings to suit popular or common gearboxes. However, we also carry blank flange custom parallel clamps for applications that aren’t common.

Pilot Bored Coupling

Secondly, Poly Flex manufactures a pilot bored coupling, the most widely recognised half coupling worldwide. A pilot-bored half coupling is commonly utilised in tapered shaft applications. However, it can also be used with straight shafts. These couplings commonly have a keyway or grub screw installed to stop the shaft from slipping. Poly Flex has a wide range of standard stock and regularly manufactures custom pilot bored half couplings to suit the customer’s application.

Taper Lock Coupling

Lastly, a taper lock coupling is used in tight, hard-to-reach straight shaft applications. A taper lock half coupling uses four socket head cap screws found on top of the coupling to tighten the coupling onto the shaft, usually without a keyway or grub screw. These couplings are used in lower horsepower applications, with a common stock of four-inch and five-inch couplings on our shelf. Poly Flex also carries blank flange options for custom manufacturing.

How Keyway Cutting And Shaft Machining Are Used In The Production Of Half Couplings

At Poly Flex, all our shaft machining and keyway cutting procedures are done on the JFMT Ji-460 lathe. We consistently monitor and inspect this lathe, ensuring that all half couplings leaving our factory meet our second-to-none expectations. All half couplings are precision bored with an H7 Morse taper shank reamer, attaining superior accuracy in hole diameter. All half couplings are clocked prior to shaft machining and keyway cutting and checked after machining for accuracy. This allows Poly Flex to dispatch half couplings internationally, including in the USA, knowing our product will fit and perform as it should. Poly Flex proudly designs and manufactures all our half couplings, allowing them to be easily modified to suit a customer’s application. For more information regarding our extensive half coupling range for the USA marine industry, please click here. Alternatively, contact us today to discuss all your manufacturing needs.

An engine mount’s primary purpose is to secure an engine to its anchor point while absorbing shocks and vibrations when in operation, making anti-vibration mounting systems essential for preventing damage to the engine and improving performance. Over time, engine mount replacements will need to be installed to prevent damage to the engine and to ensure ongoing user comfort. Understanding when your mounting systems need replacing is key to having a smooth engine experience. Below, we outline some key symptoms of damaged engine mounts and what happens if damaged engine mounts go unchanged, along with a few other frequently asked questions regarding engine mount replacements.

The Cost Of Waiting Too Long For Engine Mount Replacements.

Being aware of common symptoms of damaged or worn engine mounts will help you identify if and when engine mount replacements are on the agenda:

Increased Vibrations:

One of the most common symptoms of damaged or worn engine mounts is increased vibration during operation. If you notice that your engine is making more noise or you feel more vibration than usual when started, this is a key sign of worn mounting systems that may need to be replaced. When engine mounts are damaged or worn the anti-vibration properties weaken as the mount can no longer perform at 100%. An increase in vibration leads to the engine making more noise, causing damage if left for an extended period.

Rough Start:

Upon starting your engine, you may notice an excessive lurch that doesn’t feel right. This is another common symptom of needing engine mount replacements. When running it may steady into a constant vibration, another telltale sign. You may also experience a lurch when turning the engine off.

A Rough Ride:

Another common sign that engine mount replacements are needed is a jolt when changing gears. Another indication is if you notice the engine is working harder under load. If your engine doesn’t have the same smooth feeling, a worn engine mount could be the cause.

Excessive Noise:

Excessive noise from the engine is a by-product of failed mounting systems. The increased movement causes the engine to become misaligned and contact other components, leading to impact sounds that become quite noticeable.

Visual Wear:

With use, engine mounting systems do change in appearance. However, if significant corrosion, cracks, or crumbling are seen, the mounts will likely be worn. If any cracks or crumbling to the engine mounts properties are noticed, this will limit performance depending on the severity and root cause. The effectiveness of mounting systems relies on their form and shape, as any changes can damage the engine. If you notice any visual wear on the engine mounts, engine mount replacements should be at the top of the agenda.

Standard Engine Mount Replacements

Poly Flex engine mount replacements are a high quality, high performance, durable and robust true marine propulsion mounting system designed with sufficient vertical deflection to obtain proven vibration isolation with minimum thrust and lateral deflection under load and inertia due to conditions. Made from high-quality engineering-grade polyurethane, these replacement mounts prevent rust and are resistant to oil and fuel. They are designed to isolate vibration across the rev range without compromising the alignment of the driveline. Designed as a fail-safe system that is capable of holding the same weight inverted to avoid the engine tearing away from its anchor point in rough conditions or in the event of a capsize. Poly Flex engine mount replacements allow for easy replacement of the core and hardware, limiting the need to replace the whole unit. They control thrust in all directions due to the core design being 360 degrees and can handle shock upon impact due to a 400% stretch factor in the polyurethane base material. All the metal components are coated in SA5 Cobalt Zinc, inhibiting rust for extended life and due to the polyurethane design, no electrolysis occurs between aluminium and steel structures.

Factors Affecting The Need For Engine Mount Replacements.

There are many reasons as to why engine mount replacements are needed. Below are some of the most common:

Poor Installation:

While you can install your engine mount replacements yourself, it is always recommended to get a reputable and qualified mechanic to either install the mounting systems or check the final installation and adjust where needed. This will ensure that your new engine mount replacements will be installed properly to perform as they should and last longer.

Ageing:

A common cause of engine mount failure is age. The materials used to make engine mounts are prone to wear over time and may lose anti-vibration properties, lessening the function of your engine. Age and stress can lead to engine mount breakdown. As soon as this is noticed, made obvious by more vibration and excessive noise, you should seek engine mount replacements.

Accident Involvement:

If you have experienced an accident, you should always check for internal damage, such as engine mount failure. The jolt of an accident can cause mounting systems to become damaged, which will worsen over time, leading to increased vibration and excessive noise.

Operation Techniques:

Excessive operation, including over-revving and improper use of gear change, can cause severe damage to your mounting systems. Practicing proper operation techniques can extend the life of your engine mounts significantly.

Fluid Leaks:

Especially in rubber mounting systems, fluid leaks could cause the material to soften, leading to failure.

How Long Until You Need to Replace Engine Mounts, and Should You Replace Them All At Once?

Usually, engine mounting systems tend to last at least 5-7 years, depending on the application. However, it is always recommended to get them checked regularly when maintenance work is conducted. Making sure your mounting systems are maintained and in alignment will keep your operating experience as smooth as possible. While replacing all mounting systems at once isn’t needed, it is always recommended. When one engine mount is damaged, more pressure is put on the remaining, causing them to work harder and accelerate the wear. If you only replace one engine mount, it is recommended you pay close attention to the others, as the accelerated wear could cause failure soon after. Therefore, you may have to change more than one mounting system, if not all, depending on how much damage has been caused. As such, it is recommended all engine mount replacements should be installed at the same time. For more information regarding Poly Flex Mounting Systems, including our Core Replacement and Engine Mount Assembly Procedure, click here.

The vibration minimizing mount is one of the most overlooked components when maintaining a vessel. While vibration minimizing mounts may not be anything glamorous, this component plays an essential role in the engine room. Engine mounts are the connection between the engine’s power and the vessel’s hull, making it crucial they are robust and well-designed. However, even the best-quality engine mounts can have problems when incorrectly installed.

The most common reasons for vibration minimizing mount failure are:

General wear and tear damage to the rubber/polymer material.

Metal components damaged by corrosion.

Improper installation.

Under sizing.

Hard shifting.

Groundings.

High loading impact/excessive g force caused by running hard in a high sea state.

Poor vessel structure, such as weak stringers or a flexing hull.

Of the reasons above, improper mount installation is most often the cause of poor engine mount performance. It is important to ensure installation is done correctly. This will ensure your investment is protected, avoid premature engine wear, prevent damage, and, most importantly, improve overall passenger comfort and safety.

Boats are designed to provide a comfortable experience for passengers, making smooth operation the top priority. One crucial component that significantly enhances the ride quality is the use of vibration minimizing mounts.

Poly Flex’s high-quality, durable, and robust true propulsion vibration minimizing mounts have controlled thrust and lateral deflection under propulsion load and inertia due to sea conditions. Poly Flex analyses the engine set-up and tailors our engine mounts to suit the application. This way, we can establish that the vibration minimizing mount will work to its desired performance before installation.

With over 1600 vibration minimizing mounts and workloads ranging from 10 to 2200 kilograms per mount, Poly Flex can assist with a commonly stocked item; however, should a custom engine mount be required, Poly Flex has the capacity to manufacture products to suit a customer’s requirements.

Made from high-quality engineering-grade polyurethane, these vibration minimizing mounts prevent rust and are resistant to oil and fuel. They are designed to isolate vibration across the rev range without compromising the alignment of the driveline. The system is designed as a fail-safe system capable of holding the same weight inverted to avoid the engine tearing away from its anchor point in rough conditions or in the event of a capsize.

Poly Flex vibration minimizing mounts allow for easy replacement of the core and hardware, limiting the need to replace the whole unit. They control thrust in all directions due to the core design being 360 degrees and can handle shock upon impact due to a 400% stretch factor in the polyurethane base material.

A marine engine mount’s primary purpose is to secure an engine to its anchor point while absorbing shocks and vibrations when in operation, making anti-vibration mounting systems essential for preventing damage to the engine and improving performance. Over time, replacement mounts will need to be installed to prevent damage to the engine and to ensure ongoing user comfort. Understanding when your marine mounting systems need replacing is key to having a smooth engine experience. Below, we outline some key symptoms of damaged marine engine mounts and what happens if damaged engine mounts go unchanged, along with a few other frequently asked questions in regard to engine mounting systems. Usually, engine mounting systems tend to last at least years, depending on the application. However, it is always recommended that they be checked regularly when maintenance work is conducted. Making sure your mounting systems are maintained and alignment is obtained will keep your operating experience as smooth as possible.

What happens when commercial engine mounts are not changed regularly?

No matter the quality of your engine mounts, they will begin to wear over time due to the factors above and eventually will require replacement. Not replacing an engine mount that is worn out can lead to the following:

Engine Damage:

Excessive engine movement may occur due to failed marine engine mounts causing misalignment. Damaged or worn mounting systems may cause the engine to slide around in all directions, which can be particularly noticeable when working hard under load.

Risk:

If a marine engine mount breaks under load, it will no longer effectively support the engine. Damaged components can create a safety hazard for yourself and others.

Is there a schedule for replacing marine engine mounts, and should all mounts be replaced at once?

While replacing all mounting systems at once isn’t needed, it is always recommended. When one marine engine mount is damaged, more pressure is put on the remaining, causing them to work harder and accelerate the wear. If you only replace one marine engine mount, it is recommended you pay close attention to the others, as the accelerated wear could cause failure soon after. Therefore, you may have to change more than one mounting system, if not all, depending on how much damage has been caused. As such, it is recommended that all replacement mounts be installed at the same time.

Alignment is key when installing marine engine mounts!

It is important to install the marine engine mounts parallel to the engine’s centreline. The engine bed/bracket must be parallel to both planes (the mounting surface must be parallel with the engine crankshaft centreline). If the marine engine mounts are not installed parallel, they will become “point loaded,” with one end of the engine mounts polymer core compressed and the other unevenly tensioned. This could result in poor performance, a higher potential for stud fracturing, or premature failure.

Hints and tips when installing marine engine mounts.

Height Matters:

It is important the engine bracket isn’t posted too far up the stud. The engine bracket is supported by the adjusting stud. Ideally, the engine bracket should sit as low as possible on the adjusting stud. The higher up the bracket sits on the adjusting stud, the more stressed the stud becomes from the propeller’s thrust risking a break. Over-extending can lead to broken studs or failure due to thrust because the polymer core is deformed. If the brackets end up too high on the stud, shimming is the solution. Shim the engine mount from the bottom using non-compressible materials such as steel, aluminium, fibreglass, or polyurethane.

Support The Engine Mounts Properly:

Engines mounted on weaker stringers can lead to transmission failures. This is due to the most damaging part of the misalignment being taken by the transmission coupling and output shaft bearings. If the marine engine mounts can’t be installed directly on the stringer, it is recommended that heavy-duty brackets that don’t flex be built.

Use The Correct Hardware:

Stainless steel hardware doesn’t have the tensile strength and rigidity needed for most installations when securing the engine mounting systems to the stringer. The ideal fastener is grade eight mild steel to handle the expected loads, and washers should be thick and heavy-duty. All Poly Flex marine engine mounts come ready to install with suitable hardware.

Ensure The Load Is Equal:

Each marine engine mount must carry the appropriate load. Having different loaded engine mounting systems can cause problems with balance, resulting in poor isolation and premature failure. Unevenly loaded marine engine mounts can, in fact, cause more vibration, defeating the purpose of an isolation mounting system. The ideal goal is to balance the weight of the engine/gearbox on each engine mount for the most even distribution.

Ensure The Surface Is Clean:

Mating surfaces for engine mounts should not be painted. Under heavy compression, even a thin layer of paint can cause a loss of tension. Ensure the engine bed is clean of any debris or rust before installing the engine mounting systems.
Engine mounts for boats are one of the most overlooked components when maintaining a vessel. While they may not be glamorous, this component plays an important role in the engine room. Engine mounts for boats are the connection between the engine’s power and the vessel’s hull, making it crucial they are strong and well-designed. Poly Flex’s high-quality, durable and robust true propulsion engine mounts have controlled thrust and lateral deflection under propulsion load and inertia due to sea conditions. Poly Flex analyses the engine set-up or equipment to be mounted and tailors the engine mount and core durometer to determine the maximum levels of vibration and durability they can withstand. This way, we can establish how the engine mounting system for boats will perform before installation.

Engine mounting system for boats

Poly Flex’s engine mounting systems for boats have countless benefits making them a trusted and reliable isolation system. All engine mounting systems are fail-safe/captured designs made from a lightweight engineering heat-cured polymer alloy that will not rust. They can handle shock on impact due to a 400% stretch factor in the base material. There is no electrolysis between aluminium and steel structures, and our engine mounts for boats will hold the same weight inverted. Poly Flex vibration isolation cores can be replaced easily when needed without replacing the whole mounting system. They are resistant to oil and diesel, all parts are available for replacement, and due to our vibration-minimizing mount cores having a 360-degree design, thrust can be controlled in all directions. All the metal components of Poly Flex mounting systems for boats are protected with a cobalt zinc coating. A few characteristics of the cobalt zinc coating process include enhanced corrosion resistance for the base metal compared to traditional zinc plating of the same thickness. Additionally, brighter lustre is produced when the cobalt zinc coating is applied. Electroplating cobalt zinc to the metal results in a uniform ductility that will be able to achieve up to six times the corrosion resistance of conventional zinc plating.

Can you install an engine mounting system for boats yourself?

When a customer purchases engine mounts for boats, it is important to ensure installation is done correctly. Improper engine mount installation is often the cause of poor replacement engine mount performance. Replacing engine mounts for boats correctly ensures your investment is protected, avoids premature wear of the engine, prevents damage, and, most importantly, improves the overall customer experience.

What fixings are needed to attach an engine mount?

Stainless steel hardware doesn’t have the tensile strength and rigidity needed for most installations when securing the engine mounting systems to the stringer. The ideal fastener is grade eight mild steel to handle the expected loads, and washers should be thick and heavy-duty. All Poly Flex marine engine mounts come ready to install with suitable hardware.

Do Poly Flex engine mounting systems for boats come with installation instructions?
